UHF solutions for tracking surgical instruments & hospital equipment
Spa Track Receives £26K+ For RFID New Production Facility
To help Spa Track Medical Limited equip its brand new RFID Pod production facility in Droitwich Spa the Worcestershire Proof of Concept Programme has awarded the company £26,600. The money will help the company meet growing demand for hospital trials of its unique surgical instrument tracking technology.
Spa Track has developed a range of RFID Pods with tracking sensors based on UHF (ultra high frequency) technology that can be securely welded onto surgical instruments. The Pods can withstand the harsh sterilisation environments in today’s hospitals as well as the demanding surgical lifecycles without impeding the performance of surgeons, enabling hospitals to track the use of their surgical instruments.
Instrument tracking is vital for a variety of patient safety reasons including the need to recall a specific instrument should it be discovered it has been subjected to an infection such as CJD (Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease) which cannot be eradicated through normal sterilisation processes.
Current methods for tracking surgical instruments are inadequate to meet the growing global demands of healthcare standards. This combined with the significant and urgent pressures on hospitals to improve patient safety during an era of severe cutbacks due to difficult economic conditions, has led Spa Track medical to design a robust surgical instruments tracking solution that is entirely fit-for-purpose.
The Worcestershire Proof of Concept Programme supports SMEs to investigate, advance, commercialise and protect early stage innovative business ideas through a partnership with the Central Technology Belt.
Spa Track will be using the funding to part-pay for specialised tooling for their local production facility which will enable the company to fulfil more hospital trials much sooner than anticipated. A proportion of the funding will go towards informing the market of the launch of the new RFID pod range.
